Saturday evening began with the Ride and Groom Relay, a brand new class for the Huntington Beach Summer Classic. The riders rode over a 1.0M course, then assisted their grooms in getting on their horse to negotiate an obstacle course! The incredibly beautiful Huntington Beach weather welcomed spectators and guests of the S&S BankCard Systems Grand Prix and the Horse Nation Foundation Grand Prix Gala. The course, designed by Mike Gallaway of Eugene, Oregon, saw 12 riders in round one. It included two combinations with a tight roll back from 8 to 9AB and a challenging turn away from the in-gate to their final obstacle, fence number 11. Final fence 11 caused four riders to have rails in round one. Ultimately, Courtney Shattuck on both her rides and her trainer, Mark Watring, aboard Balyon were the only three pairs to successfully complete the first round clear in the time allowed to move onto the jump off!

and home to fence 7. Shattuck went in first on Wylie, setting the standard with a clean round in a time of 35.66! Watring put in a fast round in a time of 31.22, but unfortunately had the final fence down earning four faults and securing the first place ribbon for Shattuck. Shattuck came back for her third and final round with Balou, putting in another clean round, but at a slower pace of 37.91, earning her first and second place!
Congratulations to Shattuck and trainer, Watring, on their sweep of the top three; it
was a great evening here at the Huntington Beach Summer Classic! The Horse Nation Foundation Grand Prix Gala had a wonderful turn out, selling out of all their VIP seats, a successful silent and live auction, and dancing into the night with a live band! Thank you so much to Horse Nation Foundation for an amazing Gala!
“We would like to thank everyone for coming at supporting the event tonight,” said Adrienne Karazissis of West Palms Events. “Horse Nation Foundation is a fantastic charity and we’re so happy to be part of their Gala. Congratulations to Courtney on her first and second place finish, she rode great tonight!”

Friday kicked off the weekend’s special classes with a competitive lead line class and the USHJA National Hunter Derby!
The six adorable lead liners stole the show Friday evening ahead of the Derby, sporting impressive dress and sportsmanship.
The Derby course, designed by Mike Gallaway, took the riders around the arena in a challenging first round course. The course included four high options, a two stride combination, and multiple jumps the riders had to ride off their eye. Nicole Kane, Nicole Husky, and Gabriela Pattinson had beautiful rounds and lead the class going into the handy round!
In the handy round, Gallaway removed the combination and made a very flowing course that allowed the riders to open up their horses’ strides. He also placed jumps four and five on a tight inside turn and jump six on a snug roll back for the handy round to set the field apart. Ultimately, Nicole Kane and Heidi Kane’s Pirouette came out on top, with Gabriela Pattinson and Churchill International Inc.’s Leandro taking second and Nicole Husky on her own Grandeur rounding out the top three!
“The lead line class to kick off the Derby was great, the kids definitely enjoyed themselves,” said Karazissis of West Palms Events. “Congratulations to Nicole and Heidi on a successful evening of showing, it was a competitive class!”
